Kaip Pilypas iš kanapių!

Kaip Pilypas iš kanapių!

Such a typical situation in Lithuania: you are driving around Lithuania’s countryside, admiring windy forest roads and silent lakes, sipping gira and snacking on šakotis cake. Then after passing a few hills, you encounter a cannabis field. Suddenly, your old friend Philip jumps out from this cannabis field and runs to you to say “hi”. What a surprise! Totally unexpected!

This is what I imagine when someone says Lithuanian saying “Iššoko kaip Pilypas iš kanapių (He jumped out of a cannabis field like Philip)”. We use it when all of a sudden something unexpected happens or an unexpected person comes. So unexpected and rarely like cannabis fields in Lithuania and guys after name Pilypas…

– Kaip tau su Justu sekasi?
– Ai, nežinau, iššoka kaip Pilypas iš kanapių ir po to vėl mėnesį nerašo…

– How is it going with Justas?
– Eh, I don’t know, he appears all of a sudden and then again doesn’t message me for a month…
